Keanjalan kulit sebenarnya dipengaruhi oleh beberapa faktor & salah satu faktor adalah keseimbangan air dalam badan & kulit. Ini bermakna, jika badan kita kekurangan air, kulit kita akan mudah menjadi kering, pecah & berkedut. Ini menyebabkan kulit kita akan nampak lebih tua dari yang sepatutnya.

Occlusive Agents
Occlusive agents meningkatkan paras kelembapan dengan menghasilkan lapisan nipis di atas lapisan kulit. Ramuan dengan occlusive agents ni seperti petrolatum, wax, minyak & silikon. Sesetengah occlusive agents seperti petrolatum boleh menyebabkan rasa berat & sticky pada kulit. Jadi, kebanyakan industri kosmetik akan mencampurkan dengan bahan lain seperti emollients, untuk menangani masalah ini.

Emollient
Emollient lebih ekslusif kerana disamping menjadi pelembab, bahan ini boleh meningkatkan tekstur kulit seperti melicinkan kulit yang kasar. Terdapat banyak jenis emollient di pasaran, bergantung kepada formula kimia yang digunakan. Emollients secara umumnya dikelaskan mengikut keupayaan untuk diratakan pada kulit.

Beza sesuatu pelembab dengan pelembab yang lain ialah kadang kala, pelembab boleh menyebabkan kulit berminyak.
